Assessment

Progressive online plus a final assessment that combines background knowledge with GDS/CRS skills for a range of clients and products.

Q. What courses does the Basic Starters Package include?

A. The knowledge based "Introduction to the Travel and Tourism Industry, plus the skills based GDS/CRS training course will train you to encode and decode IATA 3 letter city and airport codes, check availability for airline seats, make client reservations, retrieve, amend or cancel them, accurately quote airfares and issue e-tickets.

Q: On the course "Introduction to Travel and Tourism" will I learn enough to understand the Industry?

A: It's a really comprehensive course, you will learn the equivalent of what it normally takes a new employee about 2 years to absorb on the job.

Q: What can you tell me about Hayton College?

A: Hayton College is an industry recognised Australian private training provider with a long track record (Since 1976) of delivering industry standard travel qualifications. Since 2001 this experience and expertise has been available online with unique interactive skills and knowledge based units which assist people to gain the skills and qualifications they need to join this dynamic industry.

Q: I've travelled a great deal, now I want to work in travel, will a travel skills course help me?

A: The Travel Industry's main work skill these days is the competent use of a Computer Reservations System or CRS, also called a GDS or Global Distribution System. It can be difficult to gain that first "foot in the door" job unless you have good PC skills, understand a bit about the Travel and Tourism Industry and can demonstrate that you understand and can use a CRS/GDS. It will definitely look good on your CV and help you land that first job.

Q: I haven't travelled much myself, will that matter?

A: Obviously, it helps but if you haven't travelled you too can succeed to get a foot in the door. Most people who want a job in travel read as much as they can about the industry and the world's destinations. Why not subscribe to our electronic travel industry newsletters to help develop and update your tourism industry knowledge. It's a good idea to download Google Earth or use a current Atlas to locate all cities mentioned in the courses.

Q: What skills and qualifications do I need to start applying for jobs?

A: You definitely need good PC and keyboarding skills, customer relations experience helps and if you have travelled yourself it helps. It is a good idea to start building up your knowledge and skills base. Why not start with the Introduction to the Travel and Tourism Industry course if you don't know much about the industry and follow that up with a GDS/CRS course.

Q. I can't type very well, what can I do about that?

A: No problem, we offer a great training course called Typequick - available online or via a USB. If you work consistently through the program you will learn to touch type with speed and accuracy. This improved skill will help you use e-mail, the internet and your CRS/GDS more efficiently. Travel Industry jobs need good keyboarding skills but you don't have to be the fastest typist in the world - you must, however, be accurate. Mistakes cost money in a competitive, commission based industry.

Q. What are my chances of getting a job after the course?

A:If you successfully complete the course content and assessments, demonstrating competence in all units, prepare a good CV and follow some interview tips we can supply on request, have good PC and keyboard skills you have a very good chance of finding a position quite quickly. We recommend you take any job your are offered, gain some experience, wait at least a year and then try to find your ideal job.

Q: What sort of timeframe am I looking at before I can apply for jobs?

Once you have completed the Introduction to Industry program and successfully completed the GDS/CRS program then you may start applying for jobs.

Q: Are my tutors in the Travel Industry?

A: Definitely, all our directors, staff, writers and tutors are involved in the travel industry with many years experience plus professional education qualifications.

Q: Can I pay in installments?

A: As most of our courses are single units and the course fees already keenly priced, we do require full payment. This is because you get immediate access to all course content. We can, however, offer a payment plan of 2 equal payments for the GDS/CRS courses.

Q: To get a job in travel, how many of these courses should I take?

A: If you have good PC and keyboarding skills, have had a job with customer service experience and some personal travel experience, it should not be too difficult to enter the travel industry. We suggest you learn about the travel industry on our Introduction course and then take an interactive, skills based GDS course. This will give you the knowledge and skills to apply confidently for an entry level position.

Q:What do I need to think about when I take an Online course?

A:You need to be able to set aside a certain amount of time each day or every second day for optimal benefit of the interactive skills courses. If you leave too long between lessons you will forget and have to revise material thus wasting time that could be better spent. Some people study only every weekend and still do very well, a passion to work in the Travel Industry certainly helps.

Q. How do I enrol or register for a course?

A:You enrol for a course by clicking on the "Enrol Now" or "Enrol Online Now" buttons next to the course you wish to enrol in. This will take you to a secure payments area hosted by PayPal, the industry leader in payment processing, where you enter your details and credit card information.
